How to Calculate Weight of Round Pipes (Round Pipe) Based on Dimensions: Formula and Application Example

April 29, 2026
Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!

Back again in #BPIPipeInsight! Previously we discussed “How to Calculate Weight of Square Pipes (RHS/SHS) Based on Dimensions: Formula and Application Example”. This time we will discuss round pipes, the most common type used for fluid channels, pressure pipes, and structural columns. To make capacity and tonnage calculations more precise, let’s learn how to calculate the weight of round pipes based on diameter and wall thickness.

Why Is Pipe Weight Calculated Instead of Weighed?
Round pipes are often produced in lengths of 6 to 12 meters, and some even reach 64 meters with large diameters. Weighing them directly is clearly inefficient. Therefore, the weight of round pipes is calculated using a formula based on outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness (WT). This data is usually available in pipe catalogs, allowing engineers to know the standard weight per meter without physically weighing the pipe.

Determining the Diameter and Thickness of Round Pipes
1. Outside Diameter (OD)
  • Listed in standard specifications (for example NPS 4 → OD 114.3 mm).
  • Can be measured with a vernier caliper.
2. Wall Thickness (WT)
  • Determined from schedule standards (SCH 5, SCH 10, SCH 20, SCH 30, SCH 40, SCH 60, SCH 80, SCH 100, SCH 120, SCH 140, SCH 160, etc.).
  • Can be measured with a thickness meter.
3. Pipe Length (L)
  • Usually available in standard lengths of 6 or 12 meters.
  • Can be measured with a tape measure.
Formula for Round Pipe Weight
W = ((OD − WT) × WT) × (0.02466 × L)

Explanation:
DF = density factor of steel (0.02466 metric formula) or (10.69 imperial formula)
OD = outside diameter (mm or inch)
WT = wall thickness (mm or inch)
L = pipe length (meter or ft)
W = pipe weight (kg or lb)

Example Calculation of Round Pipe Weight

OD = 610 mm, WT = 12.7 mm, L = 12 meters

W = ((610 − 12.7) × 12.7) × (0.02466 × 12)
W = 2244.76 kg

Therefore, the weight of a round steel pipe with OD = 610 mm, WT = 12.7 mm, and L = 12 meters is
2244.76 kg.

Conclusion

Calculating the weight of round pipes makes it easier to determine project tonnage, transportation, and installation, and ensures that piping systems remain safe.
