Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!
Welcome back to #BPIPipeInsights! This time we will discuss steel pipes for the geothermal sector. Geothermal energy is one of Indonesia’s most promising renewable energy sources, and the success of geothermal projects greatly depends on steel pipe materials that can withstand high temperatures, high pressure, and corrosive environments.
Product Standards
BPI steel pipe products for the geothermal sector are produced according to international standards widely used in the geothermal industry, including:
- API 5L – Standard for line pipe. Used in high-pressure geothermal fluid pipelines. For conditions where the fluid contains H₂S or other corrosive elements, API 5L Sour Service (MS) according to PSL2 with low sulfur and phosphorus limits can be selected.
- API 5CT – Standard for casing and tubing for wells. Used as well protection in geothermal projects to withstand extreme pressure and temperature cycles.
- ASTM A671 – Standard for Electric-Fusion-Welded Steel Pipe from carbon steel plate, used for low to medium pressure service. Suitable for hot water and steam piping systems.
- ASTM A672 – Standard for Electric-Fusion-Welded Steel Pipe from carbon and alloy steel plate, specifically for high-pressure service at moderate temperature. Suitable for geothermal fluid pipelines requiring high pressure resistance.
Main Applications
- Geothermal Wells → casing and tubing to withstand high pressure and temperature below the surface.
- Geothermal Power Plants → steel pipes to transport steam and hot water to power plant turbines.
- Geothermal Energy Distribution Systems → steel pipes to deliver geothermal energy to public facilities or district heating systems.
Implementation of BPI Steel Pipes in Geothermal Projects
BPI steel pipe products have been used in various geothermal energy projects in Indonesia, including:
- Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant, North Sulawesi
- Ulubelu Geothermal Power Plant, Way Panas Mountain, Lampung
- Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant, North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra
With strict API and ASTM standards, BPI supports the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable geothermal power plants. BPI steel pipes have proven capable of meeting the challenges of high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive fluid conditions.
Conclusion
With product standards including API 5L, API 5CT, ASTM A671, and ASTM A672, Bakrie Pipe Industries (BPI) steel pipes are ready to support geothermal projects in Indonesia. BPI’s presence in the geothermal energy sector is tangible evidence of our commitment to providing high-quality steel pipe solutions to support the transition to clean and sustainable energy.
