Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!
After the previous #BPIPipeInsights! where we discussed steel pipe standards ASTM A252, ASTM A53, ASTM A139, ASTM A672, and ASTM A795, this time we will review another standard that is also important for pressure projects, namely ASTM A671. This article is educational in nature, providing a basic understanding of the scope, grade, class, and typical applications of ASTM A671.
Scope of ASTM A671
ASTM A671 is the standard specification for Electric‑Fusion‑Welded (EFW) steel pipe with filler metal, fabricated from pressure vessel quality plate. This pipe is designed for pressure service at atmospheric and lower temperatures.
- Diameter: generally ≥ 16 inch (DN 400)
- Thickness: ≥ 6 mm (up to ±75 mm)
- Length: usually 6 m and 12 m, adjustable to project requirements
Grade and Class in ASTM A671
- Grade → determined by the type of plate used (for example, A516 Gr.60/65/70 → CC60/65/70).
- Class → determines heat treatment, radiographic test, and hydrotest.
- CL10 → As welded, without PWHT, no additional test.
- CL12 → As welded + RT + hydrotest.
- CL22 → Stress relieved + RT + hydrotest.
- CL32 → Normalized + RT + hydrotest.
- CL42/52 → Normalized & tempered or quenched & tempered + RT + hydrotest
Note: The selection of grade & class must be adjusted to operating pressure, temperature, and required mechanical properties.
Characteristics of ASTM A671
- Material: pressure vessel quality plate (A285, A515, A516, A537, etc.).
- Production method: LSAW/DSAW with filler metal.
- Heat treatment: varies according to class (as welded, stress relieved, normalized, quenched & tempered).
- Testing: tension test, bend test, optional impact test, radiography, and hydrotest.
Typical Applications of ASTM A671
- Power plants: cooling water lines, condensers, feedwater.
- LNG & petrochemical industry: process piping at low temperatures.
- Oil & Gas: low–medium pressure pipelines for cold fluids.
- Industrial infrastructure: piping systems requiring toughness at low temperatures.
BPI Readiness
Although ASTM A671 is not as popular as A53, A252, A139, or A672 in the Indonesian market, BPI is capable of producing it because:
- LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding) facility → supports large diameter pipe production from plate with high precision using Three Roll Bending & Mechanical Expanding technology.
- Experience in producing ASTM A672 → a similar technical basis, only differing in application conditions (moderate vs low temperature).
- Quality assurance support → complete with Mill’s Inspection Certificate, NDT, hydrotest, and radiography as required by the project.
Closing
ASTM A671 is the right choice for projects requiring EFW steel pipe with toughness at low temperatures. With LSAW facilities and long experience in producing internationally standardized steel pipes, Bakrie Pipe Industries is ready to support the needs of energy, LNG, petrochemical, and industrial infrastructure projects.
