Fire is a dangerous threat and can result in loss of life if we do not make appropriate efforts to prevent fire. Awareness of the importance of fire prevention and early response to fire dangers is generally still felt to be very lacking, especially for the Indonesian people. So fire incidents often occur which result in a lot of losses. To prevent fire incidents and reduce the impacts they cause, an adequate level of knowledge about fire is required.
HSE and HRD Department PT. Bakrie Pipe Industries conducted Safety Awareness Training on Friday, October 6 2023. The training participants consisted of 43 representatives from all departments. This activity aims to increase awareness and knowledge regarding Occupational Safety and Health control, and to fulfill the Republic of Indonesia Labor Decree Number No. 186/MEN/1999 concerning fire fighting units in the workplace. Management or entrepreneurs are obliged to prevent, reduce, extinguish fires and carry out fire prevention drills in the workplace.
First of all, the instructor from the PT HSE team. BPI introduces fire classification to recognize the types of fire extinguishing media, so that participants can later choose the right media if a fire occurs based on the classification.
The following fire extinguishers are used during "Fire Fighting" training:
1. Water: can be used to extinguish class A and B fires
2. CO2: can be used to extinguish class B and C fires
3. Chemical powder/flour
The following are things you need to pay attention to when extinguishing:
1. Wind direction
2. Type of material burned
3. Volume and potential of burned material
4. Location and environmental situation
5. Duration of burning
6. Extinguishers available
Next, the instructor explained the techniques for using fire media by paying attention to extinguishing safety guidelines. These tools consist of:
1. Hydrants
2. Light Fire Extinguisher (APAR)
3. Heavy Fire Extinguisher (APAB)
4. Wet Sack
With this training, it is hoped that participants will understand more about the causes of fires, gain basic knowledge about fire prevention efforts, and be able to practice directly operating fire extinguishers.
